Kazakhstan Regulator Targets Apple, Google to Block Coinbase and HTX
Astana's AIFC regulator plans to serve Apple and Google with injunctions against Coinbase, HTX, and four other unlicensed crypto platforms.
Kazakhstan's financial regulator isn't taking no for an answer. After a court refused to directly order Apple and Google to act, the Astana International Financial Centre's regulator is going around the ruling — serving both tech giants with injunctions it already won against Coinbase, HTX, and four other crypto platforms operating without a license in the country.
The move is a creative workaround. The AIFC regulator secured those injunctions fair and square, and now it's putting Apple and Google on notice directly. The goal is clear: get unlicensed crypto apps pulled from app stores for Kazakhstani users. If the tech platforms comply, traders in the country lose easy mobile access to those exchanges overnight.

This matters if you're watching the global regulatory squeeze on crypto. Kazakhstan isn't a minor player — it became a significant Bitcoin mining hub after China's 2021 crackdown. Regulators there have serious motivation to control which exchanges operate within their borders, and going after app distribution is an increasingly common pressure point worldwide.
For Coinbase and HTX specifically, this is another front in the battle for market access. Getting delisted from app stores in any jurisdiction is a real operational headache, even if workarounds like browser-based trading exist. Retail users follow the path of least resistance, and that path runs through the App Store and Google Play.
